The 4th official assists the referee and assistant referees by overseeing administrative duties, ensuring the smooth operation of the match. At Snap Soccer events, their responsibilities include managing substitutions, monitoring the technical areas, and stepping in if necessary to replace the referee or assistant referee.
At Snap Soccer events, the primary duties of a 4th official include:
While the 4th official does not make decisions on the field during play, they can provide crucial support and information to the referee. They may also assist with reviewing off-the-ball incidents that the referee may have missed.
The 4th official communicates with the referee through radio communication (if applicable), hand signals, or verbal cues when necessary. This allows them to relay important information about substitutions, injuries, or any other issues that may arise.
The 4th official is responsible for managing substitutions. They ensure players enter and exit the field according to the rules and in the correct manner.
If any problems arise involving the teams (e.g., players misbehaving, coaches leaving the technical area), the 4th official is responsible for alerting the referee. They may also act as a mediator in minor conflicts and assist in resolving issues before they escalate.
In case of an injury to the referee or an assistant referee, the 4th official is typically called upon to step in and take over their duties. If the 4th official takes on this role, the match will be temporarily paused while a replacement is found or the 4th official steps in.
The 4th official typically requires the same basic equipment as the other referees: a whistle, flag, notebook, and pen. They should always have their usual kit in case they need to cover for the Center or Assistance Referees, but should otherwise be in all black gear. For higher level games, they may also have a communication device (such as a radio headset) to stay in touch with the referee and assistant referees.
To encourage referees to stay in the game and continue working Snap Soccer events, we are now introducing a new Referee Incentive Program for our SNAP Referees. For every 50 games worked at a Snap Soccer event, referees will receive a $150 bonus. There is no limit to the number of times this bonus is received. The game count refreshes August 1st each year. Snap Soccer will track referee game counts on a leaderboard which will be available for all officials to view.
Referees who achieve a bonus will be highlighted on Snap Soccer’s website and social pages. At the end of our spring season, the referees who have worked the most games since August 1st, will receive special recognition and prizes. Here is the current list of events/games eligible to count toward this program:
*To receive credit for these games worked, the Referee Assignor must submit game totals to Snap Soccer after the conclusion of the event.
**This event is invite only.
